The Stripper…
January 2017…

Dear members,

I hope that 2017 has started well for you.

We have finalised our programme of talks for the coming year but are still fine tuning the outings and some other events. For those who live in the Wansford area and receive our parish magazine "Living Villages", you will not be receiving another issue until 6th February, so it important to note the date of our first talk - THURSDAY 2nd FEBRUARY.

Here is the list of our Spring Talks, all free, all in the Christie Hall starting at 7.30 p.m.. Please note them on your calendar and in your diaries and do come along, bringing friends and neighbours!

Thursday 2nd February: Speaker - Michael Brown. Jane Austen's Gardens. (2017 is the 200th anniversary of her death, and Mike, the Historic Gardener, explores gardens she would have known and used to set the scene for her characters, their invisible gardeners, their size and taste.)

Thursday 9th March : Speaker - George Stevenson . The National Gardens Scheme

Thursday 6th April : Speaker - Ann Bird. The World of Roses (Ann is an R.H.S. judge and very expert!)

At the A.G.M. and Christmas party we proposed a new idea to run a two day coach trip with an overnight stay in a hotel. The venues - Sissinghurst Castle (Vita Sackville West) and Great Dixter (Christopher Loyd) are just 12 miles apart and are two of of the most celebrated gardens in the country. 30 people at the party signed a list to show a keen interest in the trip, although there was no obligation, and others who read of our plans in Living Villages have expressed interest too. Since then we have been challenged to find a hotel in the vicinity big enough, reasonable enough, not already very booked up and prepared to take a group booking.

We decided on the weekend of 1st and 2nd July for the excursion. The coaches we use from Dew's are usually 49 seater.

  • Sissinghurst - free to National Trust members, 2016 price for others was £11
  • Great Dixter - 2016 entry was £9.50. These may well increase slightly.
  • Cost of the coach - £24 per person, plus we have to cover the cost of the driver's accommodation and his evening meal and breakfast which would add a little.
  • The hotel...
  • £71 for a double or twin
  • £55 for a single
  • £85 for triple or quad
  • Breakfast is £6 per person on top
  • The rates are non-refundable so we cannot reserve until we know what we want. We therefore have to set a deadline for people to commit to this excursion. Can I ask you therefore to let me know definitely if you would like to participate in this trip by a month's time: February 14th, Valentine's Day! Of course, if we find there is considerable interest the coach may fill up before then.

Membership cards will be with you shortly and meanwhile, if you still owe us your subs for 2017 can I encourage you to transfer the money - still £2.50 per person - to our bank account by BACS? Wansford and District Horticultural and Crafts Society, Lloyds Bank, Sort Code77 -72 -27 Account number 04588968.

Many thanks! I look forward to hearing from you and/or seeing you at the talk on 2nd February.

    Gill.
